Lower Hempton Farm
By Stuart Tyler
**work in progress**
Lower Hempton Farm was demolished, unrecorded. Available information on the farmhouse and outbuildings is limited.
Three homes built in the 20th century by Mr Shellard of Lower Hempton Farm give us some detail of some of the buildings near to the farm. These homes were all accessed by the former northern arm of Hempton Lane, two on the western side and one on the eastern side. These homes were named Sunnyside, (The) Portico and Hempton Gables, . No remains of these buildings exist today. I will detail these homes at a later date.
Lower Hempton Farm also had a number of ponds and streams close to the farmhouse and in their fields. No evidence can be seen of these today (above ground), but old maps give their former locations.
I have not been able to discover and visible remains of the farm today, searching on foot. There are no trees, ponds or any hint of its existence. This was not the case in the late 1970s. A survey of the area uncovered some very interesting details of the history of a significant area of Lower Hempton Farm, which i will detail at a later date.
In the publication "Patchway Roundabout" (J P Agate, 1979), the buildings of Lower Hempton Farm are described as "unpretentious". It is unclear whether this is meant as a compliment to this farm, but it remains the only description of these buildings i have been able to locate.
I have not been able to locate any photographs of the buildings of this farm, including the farmhouse.
